Rings of Power: Season 2

Writer: G R MatthewsG R Matthews

This is likely to be a short blog post.

That's not because I am full of vitriol about the treatment of Lord of the Rings, that they have taken two ages and squished them into one. I am taking it as it is - a story inspired by Tolkien's work, rather than a reproduction of.

They had a task before them when writing season 1 and 2. How to take everything that goes before the Lord of the RIngs and squeezing it into a TV series. How to make those thousands of years of history and make it into a sequential story which does justice to the imagination, to the world created and to satisfy everyone.

Of course, it was never going to satisfy everyone. Too true to the original vision and few would watch it, too far and no one would view it as anything but an interesting, if flawed, take on the stories.

It is not too much of a stretch to say it has erred towards the latter perhaps a little too far.

There are bits I enjoy.

The world echoes that of Tolkien's and the landscapes have that epic quality. The costumes are good too. Even some of the battle scenes are good. I like the elves, the dwarves, and races of man. There are villains a plenty, both obvious and hidden - if it wasn't set in Middle Earth you might even commend some of the writing and the storyline.

But it is, and there's the rub.

And I'll leave it there. Half-formed, half-written, half-described, half-done - just like the show.
